QUALITY CATTLE SLATS

With a history in the farming community, Harrington’s have produced high quality cattle slats for over 30 years. Over the years, our slats are constantly upgraded, designed for a longer lifespan and to wear well under constant use.

Harringtons CE Certified cattle slats are approved by the Department ofAgriculture, Food, and the Marine, and are featured on the current Accepted Concrete Slat List for use in grant-aided buildings.

Our complete range of cattle slats, manhole slabs and wall beams conform to and exceed the European standard: I.S. EN 12737:2004+A1:2007 Precast concrete products – Floor slats for & I.S. EN 13225:2013 Precast concrete products – Linear structural elements. See our Technical Certification Tab for documentation purposes.

SLAT DESIGN

Harringtons cattle slats are designed to drain slurry away as quickly as possible, leaving a clean surface, which leads to cleaner cows. The standing space design of 165mmwide ribs and optimised slot sizes maintain cow hoof comfort, and fast draining action helps to prevent slurry heel and other associated foot problems.

At Harringtons we say that ‘there is no strength in water’, so all our high strength cattle slats, beams and slabs are produced using a dry-cast manufacturing process.

The key to quality concrete is to keep the water-cement ratio as low as possible.
All cattle slats are available with an extra dairy grip upon request.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The cattle slat dry cast manufacturing process at Harrington Concrete & Quarries is manually overseen by a specialist production team for quality control and visual inspection at each stage, ensuring a good quality, nice finish, and consistent product.,

CATTLE SLAT REPLACEMENTS

  • The lifespan of slats done to grant specification is around 20 years. Intensive use of slats, slurry reaching them, Machinery crossing etc. will shorten the lifespan of the slats.
  • In the event of slats collapsing the outcome is usually death to livestock.
  • Old slats are a danger to both livestock and the farmer themselves.
  • As cattle slats get older, they should be inspected annually and replaced at the first signs of weakness.
  • When replacing slats, the most appropriate time to this is when cattle are put out for grazing.
  • For health & safety purposes ensure tanks are emptied prior to the replacement of slats.

HOW TO CHECK CATTLE SLATS

Slats generally will corrode from the bottom which means slat
condition cannot be seen easily from the top surface.

  • Cattle slats should be power washed prior to inspection.
  • A straight edge should be placed from end to end on the slat to see if the slat is showing any signs of sagging.
  • Scraping down the edge of the slat between the toe pieces may reveal concrete is beginning to break away from the bottom surface of slat.
  • When spreading slurry look out for broken pieces of concrete which will fall into tank when broken away from slat.
  • Never enter the slurry tank to inspect slats.
